COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
• Rushing through steps without covering each area fully
• Forgetting to wash between fingers and toes
• Using excessive water — the Prophet ﷺ used very little
• Missing the wiping of the head (masah)
THE WISDOM BEHIND WUDU
Wudu is both physical and spiritual purification. Each wash removes minor sins — the Prophet ﷺ said sins fall away with the water, even from beneath the fingernails. It prepares your heart and body to stand before Allah.
Quick tip: Wudu stays valid until broken (using the bathroom, passing wind, deep sleep). You don’t need to repeat it for every prayer if it hasn’t broken.

Intention (Niyyah) + Bismillah
In your heart intend to purify yourself. Say "Bismillah."

Wash Both Hands ×3
Wash up to the wrists, between the fingers, three times.

Take water in your right hand and rinse three times.

MORE THAN PHYSICAL CLEANSING
The Prophet ﷺ said that sins fall off with every drop of water in wudu (Muslim #244). It is a spiritual reset as much as a physical one — the act of making wudu is itself an act of worship, even before prayer begins. Many Muslims find peace just in the ritual.

Make the sincere intention in your heart to pray. It doesn't need to be spoken aloud.

Raise both hands to your ears and say "Allahu Akbar" — the prayer has begun.

Place right hand over left on your chest. Recite Al-Fatiha, then a short Surah.

Ruku — Bowing
Bow with a flat back, hands on knees. Say "Subhana Rabbiyal Adheem" 3 times.

I'tidal — Rising
Rise saying "Sami Allahu liman hamidah", then "Rabbana lakal hamd".

Lower to the ground on 7 points. Say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" 3 times.

Sit calmly between the two prostrations. Say "Rabbighfir li".

Turn your head right, then left: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah". Complete.

Each position has meaning. Standing is conversation with Allah. Ruku (bowing) is acknowledgment of His greatness. Sujood (prostration) is the closest a human gets to God — the Prophet ﷺ said: “The closest a servant is to his Lord is when prostrating” (Muslim #482). THE BASICS
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib) — no food, drink, or intimacy during daylight. The pre-dawn meal is called Suhoor and breaking the fast is called Iftar, traditionally with dates and water.
WHO IS EXCUSED
The sick, travelers, pregnant or nursing women, the elderly, and women on their period are excused. Missed fasts are made up later, or compensated by feeding the poor when fasting isn’t possible.
NEW MUSLIM TIPS
• Never skip Suhoor — even a glass of water and dates helps
• Your first fasts may be hard. That’s normal — the reward is immense
• Join your masjid for Iftar; community makes it easier and joyful
• Taraweeh (night prayers) are beautiful but optional — pace yourself
BEYOND RAMADAN
Voluntary fasts include Mondays & Thursdays and the “white days” (13th–15th of each lunar month). Start small — consistency beats intensity.

You don’t need Arabic to begin. Start with a good English translation (Saheeh International or The Clear Quran) and read just a few verses daily. Meaning first, Arabic later.
SHORT SURAHS TO LEARN FIRST
• Al-Fatiha (1) — required in every prayer
• Al-Ikhlas (112) — 4 verses, equals a third of the Quran in reward
• Al-Falaq (113) & An-Nas (114) — protection
• Al-Asr (103) — just 3 verses
LEARNING ARABIC LETTERS
The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters and most people learn to read within 2–3 months of short daily practice. Ask your masjid about beginner Qaida classes — nearly every masjid runs them.
ETIQUETTE WITH THE QURAN
• Be in a state of Wudu when touching the Arabic mushaf
• Begin with “A’udhu billahi min ash-shaytanir-rajim”
• A little every day beats a lot once a month
WHY IT STILL MOVES PEOPLE
The Quran is unlike any other text — it was meant to be recited aloud, and its Arabic sound carries something that translations can only gesture toward. The Prophet ﷺ wept when he heard it. Thousands today say their journey to Islam began with hearing a verse they didn't even understand. Start with the meaning; the sound will come.

• Not permitted: pork and its derivatives (gelatin, lard), alcohol, and meat not slaughtered Islamically
• Always halal: seafood, fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy
• Look for halal certification logos; when unsure, ask — or choose the seafood/veggie option
EVERYDAY LIFE
• Interest (riba) on loans is avoided — ask about Islamic finance options
• Gambling and lottery are not permitted
• Honesty in work and trade is itself an act of worship
THE GENTLE PRINCIPLE
In Islam, everything is permissible unless clearly prohibited — the haram list is short, the halal world is vast. Transition gradually; Allah rewards every sincere step, and your mentor can help with the gray areas.

None of this is something to be scared of, and you don't have to do it all at once. Every single Muslim — even those born into it — learns at their own pace, and Allah sees your effort, not your perfection. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if small” (Bukhari #6464). Pick just one thing that speaks to you, and start there.

The morning athkar take about 10 minutes and carry enormous reward. Even doing 2–3 of them consistently is a great beginning.

Closing the day with dhikr puts your heart at rest. Start with the short ones — Bismillah before sleep and the protection dua.

Daily Tasbih
After each prayer, say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 33 times. The Prophet ﷺ taught this dhikr to his companions (Muslim #597). It takes two minutes and is a beautiful way to stay connected.

Friday prayer at your masjid — you don't need to pray yet, just sitting and observing is a profound experience. Tell your mentor; go together.

THE MEANING
“Islam” comes from the Arabic root salam — peace. It means finding peace through willing submission to the One God. A follower is a “Muslim” — one who submits. Nearly 2 billion people, one in four on Earth, across every race and culture.
THE CORE BELIEF
Muslims believe in One God — Allah, simply the Arabic word for God, used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews as well. He has no partners, no equals, and no children. He is closer to each of us than our jugular vein (Quran 50:16), and hears every whispered prayer. and every prayer is heard by Allah — spoken anytime, anywhere. No intermediary is required between a person and their Creator.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Islam is built upon five.” (Bukhari #8). Like pillars holding a building, each one trains a different part of the soul — belief, discipline, generosity, restraint, and unity.

HIS LIFE
Born in Makkah in 570 CE, orphaned young, he grew up known for honesty — his city called him Al-Amin, the Trustworthy, decades before prophethood. At 40, while retreating in a mountain cave, he received the first revelation of the Quran through the angel Gabriel.
HIS CHARACTER
When his wife Aisha was asked what he was like, she answered: “His character was the Quran” (Muslim #746). At home he served his family with his own hands — mending his own sandals and helping with household tasks (Bukhari #676). Despite leading an entire community, he stood in night prayer so long that his feet would swell; when asked why, he replied: “Should I not be a grateful servant?” (Bukhari #1130). When he returned victorious to Makkah — after years of persecution — he stood before thousands of people who had once driven him out and declared a general amnesty, forgiving them all. The Quran describes him as “a mercy to all the worlds” (21:107). He forgave them all.
HIS MESSAGE
Not a new religion, but the same call of every prophet before him: worship the One God alone and treat creation with justice and mercy. He said: “I was only sent to perfect noble character” (Musnad Ahmad #8952 — sahih), and: “The best of you are those best in character” (Bukhari #3559).
WHY ﷺ?
You’ll see this symbol after his name — it means “peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.” Allah Himself commands it in the Quran: “Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him” (Quran 33:56). And the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever sends one blessing upon me, Allah sends ten upon him” (Muslim #408). So Muslims say it out of love, obedience, and gratitude — honoring the man who carried this message to us at immense personal cost, and earning mercy with every word.

The Quran is the literal word of God, revealed to Muhammad ﷺ over 23 years. It has remained letter-for-letter unchanged since — memorized completely by millions in every generation, a preservation unmatched by any other book in history.
WHAT’S INSIDE
God’s nature and mercy, the purpose of life, stories of the prophets — Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus appear throughout — justice, the afterlife, and practical guidance for daily living. Mary, the mother of Jesus, has an entire chapter named after her.
CAN I READ IT?
Absolutely. Translations exist in nearly every language, and anyone is welcome. Countless journeys to Islam began with someone opening a translation out of simple curiosity. Try Surah Ar-Rahman (chapter 55) or Maryam (chapter 19) as a first taste.

MUSLIMS LOVE JESUS
Jesus (Isa, peace be upon him) is one of the greatest prophets in Islam. Muslims believe in his miraculous virgin birth, the miracles he performed by God’s permission, and his return before the Day of Judgment. No one is Muslim without loving Jesus.
ONE UNBROKEN MESSAGE
God sent prophets to every nation — Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus, and finally Muhammad (peace be upon them all) — all carrying one message: worship the One God alone. Islam sees itself not as a new religion but as the completion of that original call.
THE DIFFERENCE
Muslims honor Jesus as a mighty messenger of God rather than God Himself or His son — believing God is absolutely One. The Quran addresses this directly, yet always speaks of Christians and Jews with a special title of respect: “People of the Book.”

Modesty is about respect for a sacred space — and it’s simple. For men, modesty means clean clothing covering from the navel to below the knees at minimum — in practice: full trousers and a modest top. For women: loose clothing covering arms and legs, and a headscarf (many masjids keep spare scarves at the entrance for visitors). Come clean and presentable; you’ll remove your shoes at the door, where shelves are provided. Silence your phone, speak softly, and that’s genuinely all that’s expected of a visitor.
WHAT YOU’LL SEE
No statues, no images — just open carpeted space facing Makkah, often decorated with calligraphy. You’ll hear the adhan (call to prayer) and see rows of worshippers standing, bowing, and prostrating together as one.
THE BEAUTY OF PRAYING TOGETHER
When the prayer begins, something remarkable happens: strangers stand shoulder to shoulder in perfectly straight rows, every worldly difference dissolved. They move as one body: bowing together, then pressing their foreheads to the ground in sujood, the posture of complete humility, where the Prophet ﷺ said a servant is closest to his Lord (Muslim #482). He also said prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times greater in reward than praying alone (Bukhari #645). Many visitors say watching their first congregational prayer moved them more than anything they had read.

Fasting dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib): no food, drink, or intimacy in daylight. A pre-dawn meal (suhoor) and sunset meal (iftar) bookend the day. Excused: the sick, travelers, elderly, pregnant/nursing, menstruating.

If their first Ramadan is near, offer to share iftars — community is the heart of it. If a fast is genuinely too hard at first, Islam doesn't demand harm. Start with intention and easier days.

Often the heaviest part of the journey. Islam commands kindness to parents — even non-Muslim parents — in all but disobeying Allah. Becoming Muslim means treating family even better, not cutting them off.
